Piano Lesson Philosophy

Warm Wind Studio has the primary goal of teaching students to love the piano. I have many long-term students and quite a few go on to expand into other musical activities.
I want to help students reveal their natural abilities. And - I've never met anyone who didn't have musical abilities!
Since beginning to teach in the early 90s, I've developed a style that covers traditional/classical study along with other styles such as pop, folk, church music and jazz. I want to prepare my students for any musical situation they might encounter. We learn note-reading as well as chords and scales for arranging and composition. I teach students to improvise and write their own songs. Everyone can do it. With some students we do a little singing or learn to accompany singers. Hand drums are used to help with rhythm.
I compose about half the music I use with my students, and am publishing some of that music.
We have a lot of fun while learning to play correctly. Emphasis is on excellence and joy.
Success at the piano requires a combination of drive and patience, and I encourage those qualities along with the notes themselves. The personality aspects that blossom with the study of piano are also aspects that enhance the quality of life in general. I hope to see my students develop a never-give-up attitude.
Therefore, playing music benefits a person's life on many levels. Mastery at the piano increases mastery
in life.
The study of music is appropriate at almost any age. Ages 4 and up, generally. In other words, adults can learn too. Actually, adults already know how to focus, so they have that advantage. Don't be shy.
Studio is located in the Turnagain Arts Building in Spenard.
